Allergy Season!

Hi Ya'll,

As I move forward with Ruff Life and Ruff Life Charities, I want to pass along useful information to my friends and customers that might help aid the high cost of Vet bills. If I can find an alternative over the counter or herbal remedy I am all for it, but never discounting the need for our Vets and all that they do for our babies.

I know that since I moved to SC my allergies have changed from bad to worse and I am also experiencing the "wicked" itchies with Jack. Yeah, even our pets have allergies. I know that is no big surprise and they might have had them for years but this year with all of our warm weather, it has kicked it up a notch!

So seeing that money is tight for our little family I have always done what I can do to find remedies that I might have in my medicine cabinet. In the past, I have always relied on my famous Benadryl back up plan but when I went to CVS, the lady looked at me funny and said there is no Benadryl tablets anymore! So after finding our what the hell she was talking about, apparently the Benadryl plant was shut down and it's not on the market right now and who knows when it will appear again. I tried the back up "Benadryl look alike" and the just didn't do the trick.

So what I found after my research is Claritin in the right dosage can work and after 2 days Jack is doing so much better. It's a little more expensive than the Benadryl that no longer exists, but it's better than the trip to the Vet for a steroid shot.

So for a 60-70lb dog a 10 MG tablet 2 times a day is a good place to start for most dogs in that weight range (modify this for different weight categories), but please consult your Vet if you have concerns or questions. Make sure it's not the Claritin D formula, the decongestant is not good for dogs and can cause BAD side effects.

I just wanted to pass along the good information I found on using Claritin for dogs, I am always so careful in what I give Jack but all th information I found seemed like a good alternative to Benadryl and it doesn't have the sleepy side effects. Good luck with the itchies!
